If the motor fails to start, or the MOTOR button is not lit, the REI program can not see the motor for some reason. Make certain that the cables from your computer to the dyno are plugged in (see help with cables on the first page). Also check that the inverter is powered (see help with power cords on main screen).

Check to for any devices such as Palm Pilots that my use the com port for communication with the computer. Many of these devices keep their software on at all times. This will lock the com port and prevent communication with the dyno. configure those programs to only start the software when prompted or switch to USB link.

Next, you will need to go to the HARDWARE pull-down menu and select the MOTOR option. The next window will be a warning; click through this window. The following window will be a motor properties window.

This window will list the motor inverter type that your dyno is using. If the motor type selected is incorrect, or set on DEMO motor, use the pull down menu to select the proper motor. Motor type should be listed in your documentation.  If you are not certain of the motor type, call REI tech support.

If the motor pull-down menu only lists DEMO MOTOR, there is one of two problems.

1 - The key is not plugged in (see HELP WITH KEY button on first page).

2 - The software has been loaded in demo mode, or the motor drivers were not installed during the software install.  If the software was loaded without plugging in the key the program will only show the  DEMO MODE. In both cases you will need to uninstall the REI program and reinstall. It is a good idea to run the REGCLEAN utility (this can be found on the software disk in the TOOLS folder) before reinstalling the software. A reinstall of the software should only be necessary if the problems developed on a new software install. If you are having problems with a dyno that had been operating correctly and you have made no changes to the computer, call REI tech support before reloading the software.

If the selected motor type is correct, click on the CONFIGURE button to check the motor properties. On the motor properties window you want to check the COM PORT number.

If you are using a computer with a serial port, the serial cable from the dyno (see help with cables) plugs directly into the computer and should not go through any type of adapter.  Most time you should be set on COM 1. Some desk top computers have more than on com port, if you have more than one COM PORT and are not certain which port is COM 1, switch the port and check the motor button on the main screen again.

If you are running the serial cable through a "USB to Serial Adapter" or are not certain which COM PORT your computer has, you can check the COM PORT number in DEVICE MANAGER.

To get to DEVICE MANAGE on you computer, Right mouse click on the MY COMPUTER icon on you desk top or MY COMPUTER (in the menu that appears when you click on the START button at the lower left corner of your monitor). A pull down menu will open, click on properties at the bottom of this menu.

From the hardware profile window select the hardware tab, then the device manager button. Look down the list of devices to PORTS. Click on the  + sign to expand the port list. In the list it should list the COM PORT numbers for serial ports on the computer and any "Serial Port to USB Adapters" that are plugged in. Enter this number under COM PORT on the motor properties window in the REI program

If the motor is still not recognized by the software, the dyno my have a wiring or component problem. Call REI tech support for assistance.
